Black-Tent Cinema
The early history of film can be located equally inside the sideshow tent as it can be found inside the confines of the traditional theatre. Before theaters were adapted to the new art form, itinerant projectionists travelled the carnival and fair circus showing films inside tents whose canvas had been painted black to keep out the light of day.
