Lucius (or Lucien) Monroe performed in dime museums for many years as "the Ossified Man." His valet, Mose (and sometimes Mr. Vanderhoo) is shown with him in most of his portraits. He was born in Manassas, Prince Willian County, Virginia, and died in Augusta, Georgia in August 1896. In newspaper accounts he is sometimes named Lucien Monroe, or L.N. Monroe. Prior to his death he lived for a time in Phoenix, Arizona when he was not traveling.
