Fred Howe was born in Alleghany City, Pennsylvania. At the age of eighteen he joined the Forepaugh Circus as a Fat Man where he met George Moore with whom he started a comical boxing act. Supposedly Howe was only 4 feet 2-inches tall, but weighed 422 pounds.
