While very little is know of Miss Agra's true origins, her son, Robert Bruce, our only primary source, tells us she was born in New York City. And not as we suspected, in the mythic Circassia, in the North Caucasus, along the northeast shore of the Black Sea. The year of her birth was probably 1841, with Barnum's first presentation of her in his American Museum in September 1864.
