Walter J. Armitage was born in Galway, New York in about 1856, and later settled in La Harpe Kansas. He was born with stunted or useless legs and walked on his hands using wooden blocks. He was mistakenly imprisoned at Dannemora Prison in New York for almost 5 years, until another man on his deathbed confessed to the crime.
