George R. Shebbeard

Born near Cooper, New Jersey August 8, 1839, Shebbeard was the 17th man to enlist in the Union Army at age 22 at the outbreak of the civil war. He first served as a drummer in New Jersey Volunteers. He served three months and reenlisted as a Private, and was later made Sergeant. He was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks in 1861 when his horse stumbled in the swamp, and he was thrown off. On examination it was discovered that his diaphragm was burst and his solar plexus nerve severed, rendering him unable to walk.
