Virginia Reel and Submarine Attacks, Coney Island
6.5 x 8.5 Photo. The popular Virginia Reel ride is shown in the center of this photo around 1916. The ride was invented and first installed at Coney Island in 1908-- a spinning roller coaster with spinning circular cars that zig-zagged down a flat-bottomed track. Also seen is the World War-I show, Submarine Attacks. New for the 1916 season, the show took over from another at the site, Aerial Night Attacks. Both attractions featured miniature German Zeppelins and submarines attacking a French town.
