Broadway & Treyser’s Palace Museum (St. Louis)

Broadway & Treyser’s St. Louis dime museum was one of the premier places to see freaks, novelty and variety performers from about 1884 until about 1890. Gregory’s Dime Museum had previously been the place to go in St. Louis, but fell on hard times in about 1885. Broadway & Treyser’s Palace Museum was founded by well-known bill poster George A. Treyser and his partner, Mr. Broadway. “The National Association of Bill Posters” elected Treyser its President in 1875, and he was active in the field at least through the early 1890s. In January 1884 Milwaukee Wisconsin’s The Cosmopolitan Dime Museum’s owner, J.E. Warner turned management over to Broadway and Treyser. In November 1885, “The NY Clipper”: “Krao, Thuma, Little Dot, and Zip are the curiosities for this week…..Businers is fair.” August 16, 1884, “The NY Clipper”: “Broadway & Treyser’s New Dime Museum is almost ready for opening. The fitting-up is being done under the supervision of James A. Barnes, the manager…..” September 27, 1884: Geo. Lippert, Jessle Ferry, Mungo Park and Lulu are new this this week.” “The NY Clipper,” January 1885: “Jojo has attracted considerable attention, and will remain another week. Balabregs, the Wild Men of Borneo, Prof. E.G. Johnson (mesmerist), Signor Doddrelti (man with from jaw), Little Tot (black eyed Albino), Colin McCloud (Scotch bagpiper), and Prof. Singieton, with his Punch-and-Judy, are announced for this week. Business is good.” March 14, 1885: -At Broadway & Treyser’s Dime Museum, the Camel-girt, Sig. Biliz and M. Louie (with their trained birds and dog), the Dutch Mendels, C. T. Taylor (magician), Thuma, Prof. King, the Leander Quartet and the Wyandote Triplete are announced for this week….Business fair to big.” June 1885: Zola Zulera, the Baby Monkey and itsmother, Eii Bowen, Arline Verona, Lizzie Sturgeon, Barney Nelson, Little Eugene Lozier……The whole show is an attractive one, and business is good.” January 1886: “Fred Howe (fat-boy). Che-mah (dwarf), Turtle-boy and Vampires are the curiosities this week, and Prof. G. Johnson (mesmerist).” April 16, 1887: The present Broadway & Treyser’s Museum, St. Louis, Mo. Will close its season June 5. During the Summer extensive alterations will be made, and the house will appear as a handsom and large museum. Manager James Juke announces that it will be virtually a new house. Curiositles and performers are being booked.” July 23, 1887: “Manager J.T. Jukes of the Museum returned from the East last week, and is re-arranging Broadway and Treyser’s Museum for the reopening. A new stage is being erected in the west end of the second story for vocal and instrumental acts, while one-act dramas are given on the first floor…….
